CINCINNATI, Feb. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — – CommuniCare, one of the nation’s largest privately owned skilled nursing companies, will host educational programs, forums and awareness efforts in honor of Heart Month, culminating on February 14 with events and activities across CommuniCare centers in seven states:  Indiana, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. These events coincide with Heart Month, established in 1964 to encourage Americans to focus on their heart health and get their families, friends and communities involved.

CommuniCare centers will offer community blood pressure screenings; health fairs providing education on heart disease; classes for the public on how to eat, cook and shop heart healthy; and quick exercise tips for both the home and office.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally, responsible for more than 17 million deaths each year, according to the American Heart Association. Millions of Americans live with heart disease, stroke or another cardiovascular condition.

CommuniCare offers post-acute care to help patients recover from heart attacks, heart surgery and procedures such as stenting and angioplasty. The company’s cardiac program provides education and counseling services to help heart patients increase physical fitness, reduce cardiac symptoms, improve health and reduce the risk of future heart problems, including heart attack.

“Sixty-five percent of CommuniCare’s patients have hypertension and nearly 75 percent have some form of cardiac involvement,” said Cassidy Komes, Corporate Director of Network Development, CommuniCare Health Services. “Our specialized work groups bring together leaders from multiple disciplines, and together we engage with our physicians and hospital partners for a holistic approach to care.”

In addition to Heart Month activities and other efforts to raise awareness, CommuniCare provides year-round education on heart disease prevention and detection measures. Employees and patients alike learn about the importance of reading nutrition labels, maintaining a healthy diet, and finding a support system.

“At CommuniCare, it’s fair to say, ‘We Got the Beat!'” Komes said. “It’s all about empowering patients to get better, so that they can return home and stay home.”

Ruth Hagen, CommuniCare’s Chief Clinical Officer, said it’s important to be proactive with care: “Focused cardiac care programs can assist staff in identifying cardiac issues early and allow them to manage and treat those issues before they become a life-threatening event.  This focus helps to reduce residents from returning to the hospital and instead, increases their chances of returning home.”
